1 In the 88 year history of the Mundial, only seven countries have won the coveted trophy, Brazil (5), Italy (4), Germany (4) Argentina (2), France (1), Uruguay (1) and England (1)

2 No country has won the World Cup three times in a row, Italy tried winning it in 1934 and 1938, Brazil tried in 1958 and 1962

3 Roger Miller remains the oldest player to play in a FIFA World Cup tournament on two occasions, in Italia 90 at the age of 38 and at USA 94 at the age of 42. Interestingly he has a record of five goals at two  World Cup tournaments, four at Italia 90 and one at USA 94.

4 Argentine legend, Diego Armando Maradona's hand of God goal remains the most controversial goal in World Cup history

5 Nigeria and Argentina have gone head to head in the World Cup four times with Nigeria losing to Argentina on the four occasions

6 Nigeria and Bulgaria have met twice consecutively in the tournament with Nigeria coming out the winner on both occasions 

7 Lucien Laurent scored the first ever goal of the first World Cup

8 Uruguay was the first ever country to host and win the World Cup tournament in 1930

9 Pele remains one of the world's most remarkable players at a World Cup, being the youngest player at a tournament to win the World Cup, the youngest player to score a hat trick and the youngest player to play in a final

10 Oleg Salenko of Russia has scored the most goals in a World Cup match, five goals against Cameroon
