#Crime Update: Two INEC Officers Alleged Arrested For N817.6m Fraud



On Thursday 15 March 2018, two Independent and  National  Electoral Commission  (INEC) officers were prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCCC) in Kwara State, Christian Nwosu and Tijani Nda Bashiru at the State High Court, Ilorin over alleged criminal breach of trust in respect of N817.6 million fraud.

The money was allegedly trusted to them while still in service as public offers with INEC office, Ilorin, at the state capital between 2013 and 2015.

 Mr. Tijani Nda Bashiru was allegedly charged with criminal breach of trust in respect of a total sum of N77 million, while Christain Nwosu, was accused of misappropriation of N4.9 million. The accused persons were said to have committed the offense between February 27, 2013, and 2015 while still in service with INEC, Ilorin which is punishable under Section 97, 315, 308 and 309 of the panel code. Though they pleaded not guilty to the charges label against them.

The EFCC counsel, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, told the court the list of eight witnesses he intended to call for evidence, including one Abdulrahman Adebayo Abdulganiyu, who he said would give evidence of how his bank account was allegedly used to keep the money.

 Justice Sikiru Oyinloye granted each of the accused persons N50 million, and they should provide two sureties in like sum. The sureties must have a landed property within the jurisdiction, said the judged.
